St. Simons Island Lighthouse is located on the southern tip of St. Simons Island, Georgia. The original 75' tall lighthouse was built in 1810 and destroyed in 1862 by retreating Confederate soldiers during the Civil War to prevent it from aiding Union warships. The current lighthouse was completed in 1872 and stands 104' tall with 129 steps of cast iron stairway leading to the galley. The lighthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of the keeper who was killed by his assistant in 1880. Of course, the ghost is only returning to ensure the lighthouse is being properly cared for.
